Story Architecture
The Master Arc
Era I — The Rise (c. 1400–1450)
Parameswara’s founding of Malacca. The conversion to Islam. The establishment of trade relationships with Ming China. The franchise’s mythic past.
Era II — The Golden Age (c. 1450–1500)
Malacca at its peak under Tun Perak’s administration. The port handles more trade than any city on Earth. This is the setting for the franchise’s primary stories.
Era III — The Collapse (c. 1500–1511)
Portuguese reconnaissance, internal faction warfare, compromised trade law. This is the active timeline of the first two game titles.
Era IV — The Aftermath (c. 1511–1530+)
The fall of the city. The flight south. The founding of Johor. The natural setting for sequel narratives.
Parallel Narrative Structure
The City of Malacca — Concept Art by Faizal Rahmat
The franchise’s defining structural innovation is its parallel narrative architecture. Shadow of the Straits and Black Tide occur simultaneously, following different protagonists through the same historical events. They never meet, but each feels the consequences of the other’s actions.
This structure allows the franchise to explore the same events from radically different perspectives without contradicting canon. It also creates natural expansion points: additional parallel narratives can be added in any medium without disrupting existing stories.
